Description
This small lithographic portrait of Kalae, a paddler and coach for Lanikai Canoe Club. The background is a hand printed relief carved from banboo and reflects a traditional Hawaiian Kapa barkcloth, the mulberry paper Hawaiians made for clothing and linens. As in traditional Kapa, the patterns were created by printing Ohe Kapala (small thing strips of bamboo that are carved into intricate linear patterns). These are inked and pressed by hand into the paper.
