There are many versions of the mo‘olelo of Ku’ula and his son ‘Ai’ai. They lived in Hana on the island of Maui. Ku’ula was a fisherman of great wisdom and power. According to legend, Ku‘ula instructed his son, ‘Ai’ai to travel throughout the islands establishing different fishing ko‘a (shrines) at fishing grounds across the islands. These shrines were a place to give pule (prayer) and ho’okupu (offerings) to the fishing gods. Legend says that each fisherman was supposed to leave two of the best fish from their catch at the shrine.
