Kaea Studio

About Kaea Studio

These pieces are a part of an ongoing series of collaborative works by Mary Philpotts McGrath and George Woollard called the Kaea Series.  Kaea is the Hawaiian name for an area in Palolo Valley where the art studio used is located.  The intention with this series is to tap into the mana or spiritual strength embodied in the aina or land of Hawaii.

The forms and colors are derived directly or indirectly from nature.  In this piece, they have hand printed mulberry papers using a variety of techniques which were then collaged on a substrate of framed gator board.  Their techniques include cut rag mat, bas relief and metallic gold powder collage.
